City/Town Snapshot: Town of Carefree, AZ

A new fall attraction invades Carefree in the form of whimsical pumpkin carvings from master carver and world-renowned artist, Ray Villafane. The first of its kind in the United States, The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden was inspired by Villafane's imagination after visiting the popular 4.5 acre Carefree Desert Gardens. He was amazed at the beautiful botanical specimens, some of the most unusual in the state, and decided to ask the town if he could make it his artistic playground. Highlights include live pumpkin carving demonstrations, photo opportunities with the "King of Carefree" colossal pumpkin standing five feet high, a 300-pound sculpted masterpiece. Ray has been called the "Michelangelo of pumpkin carving" by Martha Stewart. This entirely free event celebrates incredible artistry and the enchantment of the Halloween season. The display runs October 16-31, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., 101 Easy Street, Carefree. For more information visit CarefreePumpkinGarden.com or call 480-488-3686.

The town has always prided itself in hosting unique, high-quality events and entertainment and will continue to work with promoters who can execute a new twist to the traditional art festival. The ever popular Thunderbird Artists continue to align itself with Carefree's art and cultural environment. The town's signature event for the past eight years, the Carefree Christmas Festival, continues to draw over 25,000 visitors in three days with snow, parades and fireworks. Starting in February, back by popular demand, the town will host free consecutive Sunday Concerts featuring top artists performing within the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. Locals as well as international visitors continue to provide feedback about how much they enjoy the venue surrounded by the scenic Desert Gardens and so the town will continue to create experiences that visitors will find memorable.

2015 has been a year of revitalization for the town council with approved plans to build two new Gateways into the Town Center along with a new Kiwanis Splash Park, featuring a life size scorpion that squirts water from its stingers and legs. In the evenings the Gardens come to life with a new reflecting pool, fireplaces and community sitting areas amongst the scenic backdrop of Black Mountain and the historical Carefree Sundial, encouraging visitors to relax and stay awhile. Keeping in step with the pedestrian lifestyle, Carefree has attracted a new luxury condo project adjacent to the town center, built by developer, Ed Lewis of Butte Companies. 49 ultra-luxury condos will provide spectacular views of Black Mountain and will offer resort style amenities and on-site concierge services.
