League Hosting Meetings for New Policy Committees

Last year, the League Executive Committee approved a change in the resolutions process. The new system allows for more in-depth research and greater involvement by elected officials and staff in developing the League's Municipal Policy Statement.

There are five separate policy committees that are going to more thoroughly vet the issues. Each of the policy committees are chaired by a member of the Executive Committee, and consist of elected officials and municipal staff. At times, other stakeholders may be invited to participate to provide needed expertise and perspective.

The five policy committees and their chairs will be:

  • Budget, Finance and Economic Development, Mayor Kenny Evans of Payson
  • General Administration, Human Resources and Elections, Mayor Lana Mook of El Mirage
  • Neighborhoods, Quality of Life and Sustainability, Councilmember Gilbert Lopez of Coolidge
  • Public Safety, Military Affairs and Courts, Mayor Jerry Weiers of Glendale
  • Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Works, Mayor Jonathan Rothschild of Tucson
The submission deadline was Friday, May 15. The submitted ideas are assigned to the relevant committees by League President Mark Mitchell, Mayor of Tempe. Each committee will be meeting to discuss and process these ideas, and an actual resolution will be crafted and submitted to the Resolutions Subcommittee.

The meetings of these policy committees will be held in June and once scheduled will be posted on the League website.

We are inviting you as elected officials and municipal staff to volunteer to participate in these committees. If you are interested, please submit your name, title and committee of interest to resolutions@azleague.org.

Following the policy committee process, the Resolutions Subcommittee will meet to discuss and process these ideas, and will forward the resolutions with recommendations to the full Resolutions Committee at the League Annual Conference. The chairs of each committee will be responsible for presenting these new resolutions to the full Resolutions Committee.
