City/Town Snapshot: Avondale - Aspiring, Achieving, Accelerating

Avondale had a remarkable year in 2014. The city launched a new brand with the tagline Aspiring, Achieving, Accelerating and a brand story that has been widely embraced by the community. This coincided with a year of achievements, including being named No. 1 Digital City on the Nation by the Center of Digital Government; Municipality of the Year by the Arizona Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America; Best General Plan Award from the Arizona Planning Association, and a No. 1 Ranked Gold Medial Community in the Let's Move initiative.

Located in the Southwest Valley off Interstate-10, Avondale is nestled at the base of the scenic Estrella Mountains where the Agua Fria and Gila Rivers meet. Avondale literally is in the heart of Arizona, positioned at the designated midpoint of state, where the baseline and median points conjoin (State of Arizona Land Department, National Registrar of Historic Places).

With a median age of 29, Avondale strives to provide open spaces and recreational amenities, and works to attract quality businesses and employers to the area. Over the last decade, population growth took place at a rate of over 114%, making the city one of the fastest-growing in Maricopa County. The current population is estimated at 83,420 and is projected to rise to 135,272 by the year 2035.

Avondale is host to two NASCAR events annually, each attracting nearly 400,000 enthusiasts and hundreds of race teams, contributing hundreds of millions of dollars in the state and local economy. Avondale is also home to the Randall McDaniel Sports Complex, which offers 83,000 square feet of indoor arena type sports, while Friendship Park, with its ten multipurpose fields, hosts soccer tournaments and special events year round.

With six independent public school districts, private and charter schools, Estrella Mountain Community College, Rio Salado College and Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Avondale offers a wide range of educational opportunities to ensure the foundation for a diversified workforce. Medical-related professions also thrive here with two hospitals on Avondale's border and Phoenix Children's Hospital in Avondale.

To keep pace with the rapidly-growing population, a variety of cultural, economic, recreational and educational advantages have evolved. Avondale offers nearly 200 acres of parks and 7.5 miles of lakeside trails for active and passive activities.

The Base & Meridian Wildlife area, a rich riparian habitat located along the Gila River with many species of fish, birds and wildlife. It has been designated as a significant birding corridor by the National Audubon Society. As the only city in the Valley where three rivers converge, Avondale celebrates its lush natural resources with the Tres Rios Nature Festival each Spring.

Avondale is gaining reputation as a budding artist community in Historic Avondale (Western Avenue and Central); home to various forms of public art displays, murals, and monthly Art Walks.

The story of Avondale is this:
If you move to Avondale, there will be a welcoming community waiting to support you and your family. If you bring your business to Avondale, you will find an environment that will stimulate success and a community ready to be your first customers. If you invest in Avondale, you have chosen a financially stable, well-run city that has proven it is a solid investment for the future.
