West Valley Cities Engage Youth in Community Affairs

Many cities and towns around the state are working to engage youth councils in community affairs. For instance, the city of Surprise has asked their Youth Leadership Commission to weigh in on city affairs while the city of Peoria has asked its Youth Advisory Board to take part in council discussions that affect the city. In the latest effort to engage young people in community affairs, Surprise youth are being asked to comment online about issues from city programs for youth to their transportation woes. Councilmember John Williams sent out a survey that asked young people five open-ended questions from how their ability to get involved is affected by personal transportation issues to what the city should do to increase services for young people. At the same time, the youth council has also stepped up its presence for youth at the League of Arizona Cities and Towns Annual Conference. Likewise, the city of Peoria's Youth Advisory Board may have the opportunity to participate in regularly scheduled council meetings. This idea, presented by Councilmember Jon Edwards, would allow for the youth civically engaged in issues affecting the cities. The students would also receive and review city council packets and provide a perspective while learning to identify council meeting protocol. Youth Advisory Board Members would alternate attendance at council meetings. This concept would be the only one used by a municipality in Arizona.
