Mayor Spotlight:
Name, title & city/town
Ed Honea
Mayor, Marana, AZ
Year elected to office: Three terms (1977-'79, '81-'83 and '91 to present)
Years served as Mayor: Two terms (1995-'97 and 2005 to present
Hometown: Marana, Arizona
Why did you decide to serve in local government?
I got involved in local government because a lot of us were concerned about the City of Tucson buying farmland for water
in the 1970s and letting the fields go fallow. That was the inspiration for Marana to incorporate. I was fortunate to be
elected to the first Town Council and have enjoyed seeing this great community grow and mature.
What are the biggest challenges facing your town today?
We must be allowed to gain maximum benefit from our water resources. That's why getting control of wastewater is so important.
We have to be able to use that component of our water portfolio to set our own course for success.
What opportunities do you see for your community?
We are a tremendous growth community. We are located between Tucson and Phoenix along almost 20 miles of Interstate 10. We have
two airports (Marana Municipal and Pinal Airpark); the railroad and Central Arizona Project run through Marana; and we are in two
counties (Pima and Pinal). We have tremendous potential for economic development here. People want to live and do business in Marana.
What are you most proud of during your time in office?
We have maintained financial stability through two major recessions, we provide great public amenities, we have a successful senior program
and we have strong working partnerships with the Marana Unified School District, the Marana Community Food Bank and the Marana Health Center.
Having strong partners is the key to any community's success.
Why is the League important to cities and towns in Arizona?
The League is a strong advocate for every city and town in the state. It does a great job working with the Legislature and courts system and
helps all of us thrive and prosper.
