Scottsdale Granite Reef Senior Center to be Honored for "Most Outstanding" Senior Center in Nation

Scottsdale's Granite Reef Senior Center recently captured NuStep's prestigious Pinnacle Award. The award is annually presented to the most outstanding senior center in the United States that best demonstrates a culture of whole-person wellness and active aging throughout its organization. The award was presented to the center by NuStep's Vice President Steve Sarns on Monday, January 30th.

Statistics/Information:
According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA):

  • Only 25 percent of people aged 65-74 say they engage in regular physical activity.
  • About 30 percent of people aged 45-64 say they engage in regular leisure-time physical activity. Only a quarter of those ages 65-74 say they do.
  • While experts say people age 85 and older, can benefit from exercise, only 11 percent of that age group report being active. At the same time, NIA noted, some older adults were contacting the Institute for guidance on kinds of exercises to do, indicating interest in becoming more active.
Exercise and physical activity are good for just about everyone, including older adults. No matter your health and physical abilities, you can gain a lot by staying active. Research shows that exercise and physical activity can help:

  • Maintain and even improve your physical strength and fitness
  • Improve your ability to do the everyday things you want to do
  • Improve your balance
  • Manage and improve diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and osteoporosis
  • Reduce feelings of depression and improve overall well-being
