Why did you decide to serve in local government?
Service on the city's Commercial Building Advisory Board got me interested in city government and led to one term as a
councilmember. I've gone through the learning curve. I've learned about processes, regulations, how council functions and how
municipal government works. I also learned how difficult it is to get things done and what I see as a need for more open dialogue
between the mayor and council, and between the city and citizenry. The most important thing leaders can do is listen to what people
want for their community. Not tell them what they're going to get. I've been helping to build Yuma since 1983. I would like to
continue to build Yuma at City Hall.

The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Phoenix Field Office awarded the city of Yuma with the "Most Valuable Partner Award" on
September 15 in Phoenix. The city received this award for supporting HUD's initiative for strengthening the nation's housing market
to bolster the economy and protect consumers. To read more,

Last month, Mayor John Lewis of Gilbert flew to Washington, D.C. to accept the Department of Defense Freedom Award. The town has
been recognized by the federal government for their exceptional support of employees serving in the military. Since the Freedom
Award was established in 1996, only 145 employers in the county have received the award.

Phoenix, Chandler, Gilbert, and Scottsdale all made it to Bloomberg Business Week's list of "America's 50 Best Cities". The
rankings are based on the number of restaurants and bars per capita and cultural venues. This also included recreational features
like parks, school performance, poverty and air quality.

State Treasurer Doug Ducey gave positive remarks to Lake Havasu City for their financial strategy and investments this month during
his state of the state update for city officials.

In addition to having high remarks on their financial investments, the city was rated as the No. 1 "'nonocean' destination" in North
America by Wanderlust. Each year, 750,000 tourists arrive to Lake Havasu and as spring break typically brings the most tourism, many
families also come out to enjoy the fun in the sun.

The cities of Tempe and Chandler are among the few municipalities that have been awarded the Environmental Excellence Award from the
Valley Forward Association. Cities are awarded for their initiative to improve the environment and livability of local communities.
In Tempe, areas such as the Tempe Marketplace have been acknowledged for the renovation of a 130-acre landfill to a shopping and
entertainment center.

Midwestern University has honored Mayor Elaine Scruggs of Glendale the 2011 COMET (Community Outreach; Motivating Excellence for
Tomorrow) Award. The Mayor is receiving this award for her support of Midwestern University's mission and her influence on the
growth of healthcare education in Glendale and the state of Arizona. To read more,

The Government Finance Officers of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the City of Sedona with a Certificate of
Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. Additionally, the city's Financial Services Department has received an Award of
Financial Reporting Achievement for the 2010 Fiscal Year. Sedona has received this award for twelve straight years.

Chandler, Mesa, and Phoenix have all stepped in to preserve and restore either recycled or outdated items into useful resources. The
city of Chandler used 1,500 discarded rubber tires, 200 feet of worn conveyor belt, chunks of old city sidewalk and 478,000 tons of
soil to transform a landfill into a city park. At the ASU Polytechnic campus in Mesa, the city has used recycled materials in
combination with drought-tolerant plants to transform an old military base into an area more suitable for students. Likewise, the
city of Phoenix replaced the Harmon Library and park into a small amphitheater for community programming or classes and added more
