Sierra Vista Unveils Fuel Facility Expansion Project

The City of Sierra Vista unveiled its Fuel Facility Expansion Project at the Pedro Castro Maintenance Center in May during a ribbon cutting ceremony.

"Completion of this project makes our facility unique in the region, as it's one of the few places where renewable fuels are offered in addition to diesel and unleaded," said Operations Manager Richard Cayer. This facility is part of the environmental sustainability objective identified as a Strategic Plan goal by the Sierra Vista City Council.

Funding was made possible through several grant opportunities through the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA), a second FTA grant from the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act, and from the Arizona Department of Commerce. The city contributed $12,796 towards the $492,796 project.

The Fuel Facility is open to city and other government organizations. Currently, the city of Sierra Vista has thirty-one intergovernmental agreements (IGA) in place for services at the Pedro Castro Maintenance Center that range from fueling to vehicle maintenance. "We are optimistic that the advantages we can offer other agencies, will be demonstrated at this event," noted Cayer.

Two new fueling options will be used in many of the city's fleet, including police cruisers, refuse trucks, and transit busses. Renewable fuels not only reduce pollution, but help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. E85 decreases greenhouse gas emissions by 15 to 20 percent as compared to gasoline, while B20 reduces greenhouse gas emissions by at least 10 percent.
