Expansion of Premises Process:

  1. Establishments with a liquor license looking to extend their premises into an outdoor patio area, applicants must submit an application provided by the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses & Control (DLLC) to the local jurisdiction in which the business is located for a recommendation from the city or town.

  2. Per administrative rule R19-1-103, applicants must submit a diagram of proposed alterations.

  3. The city or town's role is to make a recommendation to the state on whether or not the liquor license footprint should be enlarged. Once the municipality receives the DLLC application, municipal staff will contact the applicant on the process timeline.

  4. Upon approval by the city, the application may be forwarded to the DLLC or taken to DLLC by the applicant to complete the process. DLLC has expressed a willingness to expedite approval of applications in a timely manner.

  5. A number of municipalities have amended their extension of premises recommendation process to expedite response time for business owners.
