Town Snapshot: Town of Snowflake

Situated in a broad, flat valley with the Mogollon Rim to the southwest and the White Mountains to the south, the town has an almost continuous barrier protecting it from severe winters. The historic town enjoys moderate weather throughout the year, which made it an idyllic location to found a community back in the 1880s. Snowflake retains a certain bucolic charm, thanks in large part to its Mormon heritage. Founded by settlers Erastus Snow and William Flake in 1878, the town is home to historic pioneer homes - Stinson, Flake and Freeman, to name a few - as well as a massive Latter-Day Saints temple. These hard working families brought with them a commitment to culture and family and worked hard to civilize the rugged American West. Today, the community boasts an astounding 45 homes on the National Register. Some are open to the public for tours along with year-around museum and home tours.
