Tempe Receives Top Honors for Drinking Water

Tempe was among only nine cities nationwide to receive the top drinking water award from the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies. Tempe received the 2011 Platinum Award for Utility Excellence last month at AMWA's annual meeting in Newport, Rhode Island.

AMWA honored 12 public drinking water systems with its top utility management awards. Tempe was among nine systems to receive Platinum Awards for Utility Excellence, while three systems were presented Gold Awards for Exceptional Utility Performance. The awards recognize outstanding achievement in implementing the nationally recognized Attributes of Effectively Managed Water Sector Utilities.

"The strong record of effective utility management shown in the City of Tempe's entry was determined by our distinguished panel of peer judges to be a significant contribution to the drinking water industry," AMWA officials said. "This award is recognition by your colleagues that Tempe has made remarkable efforts to compete in a highly challenging and constantly changing environment and has done so over a sustained period of time."

The winners were identified by peer review panels comprised of executives of prior award-winning utilities. Their performance was evaluated in the areas of product quality, customer satisfaction, employee and leadership development, operational optimization, financial viability, infrastructure stability, operational resiliency, community sustainability, water resource adequacy, and stakeholder understanding and support.
