City of Flagstaff Announces a New Initiative to Help Businesses Thrive

The Sustainability Program announced a new initiative that can be appreciated by anyone with an interest in how businesses can be a force of positive change in their community. The Flagstaff Sustainable Business Guide helps businesses save money by identifying practical solutions for more sustainable operations. The Guide was developed to help businesses of any size analyze their performance and promote progress while encouraging employee involvement, information and resource sharing.

The Guide identifies strategies for Flagstaff businesses to align environmental and social considerations as a means of gaining market advantages. The Guide provides support for business owners, managers and employees seeking to operate more sustainably, an important goal in achieving economic prosperity.

Primarily intended for businesses, the Guide's contents and suggestions are also applicable to non-profit organizations, professional associations and government offices. Eight main sections to the Guide provide the tools a business needs to take toward becoming a sustainable business, including: sustainability management, quality of life, pollution prevention and cleaner operations, waste prevention, water conservations, energy efficiency and renewable energy, sustainable transportation and sustainable purchasing.

Each section of the guide provides a brief introduction, indicates a number of specific and practical steps a business can take and highlights examples of businesses in Flagstaff working toward sustainability. Derrick Widmark, owner of Diablo Burger in Flagstaff noted, "There is no 'silver bullet' of sustainability. We have chosen to think of the challenge of being as sustainable as possible in terms of 'what do we value?'

The Sustainability Program will be partnering with NAU's Net Impact, a business student group, to provide assistance to select businesses in implementing strategies as identified in the guide. The partnership will help to increase utilization of the guide and provide students with practical business experience.
