Litchfield Park Wins $35,000 Grand Prize from Sprite Spark Parks

Thanks to a great "full-court press" effort by the City of Litchfield Park, the Parks and Recreation basketball court soon will be an improved place for local residents to play. This month, the Litchfield Park basketball court was named a winner in the Sprite Spark Parks Project, earning $35,000 in renovation grants.

"The enhancements to the Recreation Center outdoor court, made available through the Sprite grant, will provide basketball enjoyment to hundreds of youth and adults for years to come," said Assistant City Manager and Community and Recreation Services Director Sonny Culbreth. "We appreciate everyone who helped to make this grant possible."

The Sprite Spark Parks Project is a multi-phase program to build and restore recreation environments where community members can get outside and enjoy fitness activities. In February, Sprite partnered with LeBron James to kick off the first phase of the program, which focuses on improving basketball courts.

Renovations are expected to begin at Litchfield Park Recreation as soon as this summer. The funding awarded through the program will provide items such as new rims, backboards, resurfacing, lights, benches and art installations. "Litchfield Park offers a basketball program for youth 4 to 14 years of age that has over 900 participants throughout the year. One goal is to make improvements that will allow several youth teams to use the court at the same time", said Litchfield Park Youth and Sports Coordinator Franz Fuhrmann.
